Steps to Becoming Certified - Water Fitness Instructor

Register for a National Testing Day (NTD)

Complete the Official Registration Form, mail or fax it to USWFA National Headquarters with your program fee.  The registration deadline is three (3) weeks before the National Testing Day.

Course Materials are sent by Priority Mail upon receipt of the USWFA receiving both the completed application and course fee.  Following are the materials sent:

  • National Water Fitness Instructors Manual (22nd Edition)
  • Pre-Course Written Materials

Note:  If you are taking the Masters Course, you will also receive the Water Fitness Managers Manual and Open Book Test.

  • Follow instructions and complete the written Pre-Course Materials as instructed. The National Testing Day (NTD) is a 6-hour course and must be taken in its entirety on the designated day.
  • Your completed pre-course materials is your admission ticket to the NTD. A USWFA National Instructor Trainer (IT) facilitates the course.
  • Two (2) of the most important parts of the NTD are the written and water test.  The written test is in 2 parts. You will have one hour to complete the written test; (30 minutes each for Part 1 and Part 2). If you read and study your manual, you should not have any problem with the written test.  The water test is eight (8) minutes for the primary course and fifteen (15) minutes for the masters course.  The class participants for the water test are the other class students.  The instructor will tell you your scores for the written and water test at the end of the class.
  • Smoking is prohibited in the classroom and pool area.

After the NTD Course:

  • All materials are sent to USWFA National Headquarters by the instructor trainer (IT) for final grading. Once we receive the materials, they are reviewed and graded. To successfully complete the course the following is required:
    • Successfully complete the written course materials.
    • Have a copy of your CPR card on file at USWFA National Headquarters.  (This should be a part of your pre-course materials)
    • Pass the written and water test.
    • Attend all of the NTD.

Your Certification Card and Certificate are mailed to you if you have successfully completed all of the requirements listed above.  You should receive your certificate approximately three weeks after your NTD.  Official Registration Form
